Mariska Hargitay Reveals She Was Fired from This 'Power Rangers' Movie
Mariska Hargitay is currently riding high on the historic 21st season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Hargitay as Olivia Benson is one of the most iconic roles in television history.
Though she's most known for her role on NBC's police procedural, she was set to star in a Power Rangers film years before stepping in the SVU's Manhattan bureau. However, the acclaimed actress has revealed that was fired from the job.
Mariska Hargitay before 'Law & Order: SVU'
Hargitay had been in several films and television series before landing one of the lead roles in Law & Order: SVU.
Some of her prior roles include Carly Fixx in the primetime soap opera Falcon's Crest, Officer Angela Garcia in the series Tequila and Bonetti, Didi Edelstein in Can't Hurry Love and Cynthia Hooper in ER.
Mariska Hargitay was set to play a key role in 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie'
In a recent interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Harigtay recalled getting fired from the first-ever Power Rangers feature film, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995). She was going to play Dulcea, a queen who helps the Rangers.
"I was so excited because I was going to Australia to play this queen," she said. "I get there, hair, makeup, prosthetics pieces, walking around like that, feeling pretty good."
However, there was a bump in the road. "I was there from November and then December, and then we were getting close to Christmas and they had me on hold a lot. And finally, around December 21, I said, 'Hey, guys, this is great, but you kept me on hold too long. I gotta go.' It's Christmas. I think that's only fair," she added.
She continued, "I fly home, and January 3 I call them. I'm like, 'Okay, I'm ready.' And they're like, 'Sweetie, you're good. Don't worry about it.' Yes, and they fired me... because I wanted to go home for Christmas and be with my family."
Was 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie' a successful film?
Australian actress Gabrielle Fitzpatrick went on to play the role in the movie.
The film was a success, grossing $66 million at the worldwide box office against its $15 million budget. It also received mixed reviews from critics. The other theatrical Power Rangers films haven't been as critically or commercially successful. 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie had mostly negative reviews only grossed $9.6 million at the worldwide box office.
While 2017's Power Rangers got mixed reviews like the first film, it grossed $142 million worldwide while having an expensive budget of $105 million.
Although Harigtay couldn't play this Power Rangers queen, she's always a queen in our book!
