Broncos trade WR Emmanuel Sanders to 49ers for third- and fourth-round picks
The NFL trade market for wide receivers is in full swing.
Just hours after the New England Patriots completed a deal with the Atlanta Falcons to acquire Mohammed Sanu, the Denver Broncos have traded wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to the San Francisco 49ers. Denver will also ship a fifth-round pick to the 49ers and will get third- and fourth-round selections.
Broncos GM John Elway discussed the deal in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday.
"Emmanuel had issues and we had issues, so that's why it was a good time for us to go in different directions. ... With that being said, we were able to get the value we thought was fair, so that's why we decided to make the deal," he said.
A report emerged Sunday indicating that Sanders would be on the trading block and that a move would be expected before the NFL's trading deadline of Oct. 29. The Broncos, after losing their Thursday night game against the Chiefs, dropped to 2-5 in the first season of Vic Fangio's term as head coach.
This trade may be the first of a series, if the Broncos opt to transition into a rebuild and swap their veteran players for draft capital.
Sanders spoke with multiple media outlets as he left the Broncos' facility on Tuesday.
"Anytime you break up or you leave a place, it's tough; we definitely had a great run out here in Denver. I had a lot of great times," Sanders said.
The 49ers, on the other hand, just improved to 6-0 as one of the NFL's two undefeated teams, after they toppled the Washington Redskins in a rain-soaked game Sunday. Though San Francisco has been riding its stout defense to early success this year, the team ranks 25th in the NFL in passing offense, with only 214.5 passing yards a game.
Sanders, 32, is in his 10th season in the league and is an experienced route-runner who should instantly give 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo a valued weapon.
Sanders has caught 30 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns this season.
